The purpose of this research is to adopt the Analytical Hierarchy Process to develop the competitive factors which can strengthen department stores’ overall performance in the highly competitive retail market. Firstly, the competitiveness indices are proposed by referring to the related literature and interviewing with the experts, scholars and industrial practitioners. Secondly, a hierarchy structure is built up to cover up these detail indices and the relative weights are assigned to each dimension and index. Finally, the data of evaluation are calculated and examined for the consistency test. This research uses seven different performance measures to demonstrate the validity of the overall competitiveness indices and the test shows that the overall competitiveness indices have highly construction validity.
