ABSTRACT

To reduce design cycle time for designing a product, the different parts of a product can be distributed and designed by multiple design teams using a collaborative design model. There exist different ways for distributing the different parts to the different design teams. If different ways are used for distributing the different part, the time for completing the design and the final quality of the product may vary. Given a product and its parts, the parts can be formed into design modules such that the number of units to be distributed to different locations can be reduced. In this research, a design module formation and design task assignment model is presented for planning and modeling a collaborative design model. The presented new model is performed with two stages. At the first stage, the parts of a product are analyzed based on functional purposes and manufacturing purposes to create the modules of a product. At the second stage, the modules formed at the first stage are assigned to the suitable design teams with an aim of enhancing performance quality of the product. A design task assignment model is presented to minimize the design time and maximize the performance of the final product. Test results and examples are presented and discussed.
